Let’s work together to make sure your Deaf and Hard of Hearing children continue to grow and succeed in ASL throughout their school years.

Moving from early childhood into school is an important time for language development. Deaf and Hard of Hearing children who use ASL need regular access to language and welcoming learning environments to do well.

Our Transition to School Service (TTS) is an expanded ASL program designed for IHP-ASL families and school teams. This program focuses on building strong language skills and supporting each child’s growth, confidence, and lifelong learning.

What We Offer:

Individualized Language Support Plans

We develop personalized plans based on your family’s unique needs to support your child’s ASL development, social skills, and learning at school.

Collaboration with Families and Schools

We work closely with you and your child’s educators to support a smooth transition and make sure everyone understands your child’s strengths and goals.

Learning and Growth Plans
Every child is different. We focus on what your child does well, identify areas for growth, and create a plan to support their continued success at school.

Continuity of ASL Language Supports

Keeping your child connected to rich, accessible ASL supports their academic and social growth.

Eligibility Criteria for the Transition to School (TTS)

To make sure this specialized support reaches the children who need it most, the program is for families who meet the following criteria:

  • Your child is between 4 and 8 years old (school-aged)
  • Your child is not meeting ASL milestones for their age
  • Your child doesn’t have ASL support at school

If your child meets these criteria and your family is ready to join an active, hands-on program, we would love to hear from you. Your participation is important for your child’s growth and success, and we will be with you every step of the way.

Together, we can make sure your child is ready for school and thrives in every setting, with the language, confidence, and support they deserve.

FAQs

Q: How often does the Transition to School (TTS) take place and how long does it last?

A: The TTS program meets twice a week for one-hour sessions over three months. Your family will develop strong ASL skills together and gain confidence using them in everyday life.

Family participation is important. Your involvement makes a real difference for your child’s learning and success!

Q: What is the difference between IHP ASL Services and the Transition to School Service?

A: The Transition to School (TTS) Service is for children who are not meeting age-appropriate ASL skills and are showing language delays. It provides focused support to help these children catch up and build strong ASL skills.

IHP ASL Services provides early support to all Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, no matter their current language level, so families can start using ASL and build language skills from the very beginning.

Q: But my child is already in school — when will this program be offered?

A: No worries! The Transition to School (TTS) Service is offered after school and on weekends to fit your family’s schedule, so your child can get the support they need without missing school or other important activities.

Deaf Mentors work with you and your child, bringing lived experience and cultural knowledge. They serve as inspiring role models, allowing your child to gain confidence, explore possibilities, and provide guidance for your family’s ASL journey.
