ASL Classes

These non-accredited classes offer students the opportunity to develop the communication skills needed in ASL to interact, socialize, or associate with Deaf people.

  • Under our ASL class program, we offer ASL 101, 102, 103 and 104.
  • All our ASL classes are in person at Durham Deaf Services in Oshawa or Thunder Bay area.
  • Each class is $200 and is 2.5 hours long every week for the length of the class.
  • Course length and fees are subject to change.
  • Course materials are mandatory for this course.
  • Weekday courses start at 6:00pm to 8:30pm.
  • Weekend courses start at 9:30am to 12:00pm.

ASL 101 – Units 1-3

American Sign Language (ASL) is the main method of communication used by the Deaf community in Canada and the United States. ASL is a visual-based language that is expressed by facial expressions and movements with the hands.

ASL 101 is an introductory course that explores the topics from Units 1, 2, and 3 of the Signing Naturally Student Workbook: Introducing Oneself, Exchanging Personal Information, and Talking About Where You Live. By the end of the course, students will gain knowledge of basic Deaf Culture, a vocabulary of approximately 500 words, non-manual signals (facial expressions), mouth morphemes information, and the specific grammar rules used in ASL.

Also, this non-accredited course offers the student an opportunity to develop the communication skills needed in ASL to interact, socialize, or associate with Deaf people and is suitable for students who have little or no previous experience with ASL.

ASL 102 – Units 4-6

American Sign Language (ASL) is the main method of communication used by the Deaf community in Canada and the United States. ASL is a visual-based language that is expressed by facial expressions and movements with the hands.

This course is a continuation of ASL 101, so ASL 101 is a prerequisite for ASL 102. ASL 102 explores Units 4, 5, and 6. The topics are as follows: Talking About Family, Talking About Everyday Activities, and Storytelling.

This non-accredited course offers the student an opportunity to further develop the communication skills needed in ASL to interact, socialize, or associate with Deaf people.

ASL 103 – Units 7-9

American Sign Language (ASL) is the main method of communication used by the Deaf community in Canada and the United States. ASL is a visual-based language that is expressed by facial expressions and movements with the hands.

The prerequisites of this course are ASL 101 & 102. This course focuses on the following topics from Units 7, 8, and 9: Describing People and Things, Making Requests and Asking for Advice, and Describing Places.

This non-accredited course offers the student an opportunity to develop the communication skills needed in ASL to interact, socialize, or associate with Deaf people.

ASL 104 – Units 10-12

American Sign Language (ASL) is the main method of communication used by the Deaf community in Canada and the United States. ASL is a visual-based language that is expressed by facial expressions and movements with the hands.

The prerequisites of this course are ASL 101, 102 & 103. This course focuses on the following topics from Units 10, 11, and 12: Giving Opinions about Others, Discussing Plans and Goals, and Storytelling and Fables.

This non-accredited course offers the student an opportunity to develop the communication skills needed in ASL to interact, socialize, or associate with Deaf people.

Parents ASL Class – Thunder Bay area

The Parents ASL Class is designed for families with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing infants, children and youth in the Thunder Bay area. The Parents ASL Class is sponsored by the Thunder Bay Centre of the Deaf.

The classes have two different levels; Level One is for those with no ASL experience and/or have no basic ASL skills and Level Two is for who have conversational ASL skills and/or want to expand on their ASL skills.

  • in-person at Northwood EarlyON located at 425 Edward Street N (suite #11) in Northwood Mall.
  • Runs for 10 weeks for 1 hour starting on October 4th, 2025. Level One begins at 9:30 AM and Level Two begins at 11 AM.
